That Among These (Rights)…
I’m just a plainspoken Colorado criminal defense lawyer, but the way I see it…
Despite American support of the government of Egypt for the past 30 years, America from the beginning has also supported certain “unalienable” rights. Among these of course, every schoolchild knows, are the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The crowds of Egyptians pursuing their lives, liberty and happiness are expressing another inherent right, the right of revolution. Our own country was founded upon that right. The last so-called free election of the Egyptian President showed Mubarak with 88 percent of the vote. Eighty-eight percent is just not believable in a free election. Neither do freely elected Presidents appoint intelligence chiefs as their Vice Presidents. That’s not credible government either. Legal and constitutional methods of government reform have been blocked by government. Dissenters are jailed, as are journalists.
There’s a fresh wind blowing in Cairo, a rebirth of the power of the people the world has seen infrequently of late. The world seems young again; I feel young again.
