Freedom of Screech
I’m just a plainspoken Colorado criminal defense lawyer, but the way I see it…
Think Colorado judges are tough?
A Moscow judge today sentenced three young women to two years in prison. Their crime? Singing. Well, not even. They lip-synced a song inside a church for a music video their band Pussy Riot (no charges there) made last February. The song begs the Virgin Mary — and anybody else with pull inside Russia — to send President Putin packing.
Protesters started another kind of riot outside the courthouse. Among them was Garry Kasparov, whom police appeared to pummel as they pushed him into a paddy wagon. I’m pretty sure that’s the first time the former chess champion has been beaten at home.
I’ve actually heard the song and — musically, at least — don’t think they deserved more than thirty days.
But Moscow judges…now they’re tough.
